Biologics and New Arising Technology
From clinical awareness and scientific study, we know that what happens in the mouth is reflected in the body, and what happens in the body is reflected in the mouth. The use of innovative techniques and biomaterials to restore lost, traumatized or diseased tissues have now significantly improved since molecular, biological advancements have come to the forefront as an integral part of the everyday oral and maxillofacial surgery clinical practice. These new clinical adjunctive materials, systems and techniques help increase the body’s natural ability to augment the normal healing processes and their capacity to improve restore and/or replace what has been lost. New nanotechnology is not something applicable only to the field of electronics, but it is also being applied to clinically-related, problems and materials in research biotechnology. Many applicable developments have resulted from these continuous research studies, and viable, clinically usable state-of-the-art procedures are now available to doctors and patients.
The natural processes of tissue repair, in particular, the application of cell-engineered repair systems (bone, cartilage, mesenchymal stem cells and other cells) are now available and have been in the market for some time now. The development of new materials at the cellular, nuclear and molecular level to include bone replacement osteoinductive and osteoconductive compounds, vascular adjunctive cellular therapies and systems to help improve specific clinical treatment outcomes are now being offered at Our Center. These include:
- Bone Morphogenetic Protein Type 2 (rhBMP-2): A human recombinant synthesized form of an endogenous body protein (growth factor/cytokine) which stimulates body stem cells to differentiate into naturally occurring, bone-producing cell (osteoblasts) thus promoting new bone growth at the site in which it is placed.
- Platelet Rich Plasma - Platelet Rich in Growth Factors (PRP/PRGF): An increased concentration of autologous platelets and factors suspended in a small amount of plasma after centrifugation. Essentially, a sterile, laboratory process producing an increased concentrate of platelets and growth of about 3 to 5 times that of normal blood providing, enhancing and improving graft vascularization, tissue healing capacity, support of matrix regeneration and facilitation of bone regeneration induction.
- Regenerative Allogeneic, Autologous and Xenographic Resorbable Membranes: Resorbable, natural and biocompatible products which are either produced from the drawing of autologous blood products during the processing and production of PRP/PRGF, or obtained from several, reputable tissue banks and manufacturing companies are used with tissue reconstructive procedures to provide barrier-like and space-maintaining properties which substantially help in predictably obtaining desired tissue regeneration results.
- Stem Cells Harvesting – There are two main types of stem cells: Embryonic Stem Cells and Adult Stem Cells, such as those found in bone marrow and teeth. Stem cells are unique because they drive the natural healing process throughout your life. Adult Stem cells help heal and restore injured tissue. Stem cells, as their name specifies are an inmature form of endogenous cells present in the body. Via a process called differentiation, the stem cell is stimulated by the body to change and morph into a different type of tissue cell, turning over and producing other type of more functional and specialized tissue cells like skin, bones, cartilage, muscles and nerve. Cell diffentiation occurs when there is a need for regenerating new tissue, thus stem cells can act as a reserve for the body cells which are able to resupply many cells that might be needed. We now offer the ability to harvest Adult Stem Cells which are processed and cryogenically stored by specialized tissue banks for your use in the future.
